TPT Title SEO: The 80-Character Formula That Ranks

Your title is the strongest ranking signal you control on TPT. Two identical resources with different titles will have completely different lives: one surfaces for a dozen search phrases, the other for none. Here's the structure that works, and why.

The formula

[Primary keyword] + [format] + [grade/level] + [secondary keyword or season] — packed into as much of the ~80-character limit as reads naturally.

Example: "Long Division Practice Worksheets & Games — 4th Grade Winter Math Review"

That single title matches "long division practice", "long division worksheets", "long division games", "4th grade long division", "winter math review" — five search phrases, one product.

Why keyword-first matters

TPT's search engine weighs exact keyword matches in titles heavily, and buyers scanning results confirm relevance in under a second. Front-load the phrase teachers actually type. "A Fun Winter Activity Your Students Will Love (Division!)" is a title only its author searches for.

Use the full 80 characters

Short titles are wasted inventory. Every extra natural keyword is another search you can appear in. In our database of 35,000+ tracked TPT search phrases, well-covered titles routinely match 4–7 real search keywords; sub-40-character titles usually match one — or zero. (Paste yours into the free title checker to see your count.)

The five title mistakes that bury products

  • Cute over clear — puns don't rank; "subtraction with regrouping" does.
  • Internal jargon — your curriculum's unit names mean nothing to search.
  • Keyword stuffing without grammar — "math worksheets addition subtraction multiplication division 1st 2nd 3rd" reads as spam to buyers, and buyers' clicks feed the algorithm.
  • Missing the grade level — teachers filter and search by grade constantly.
  • Duplicating your store's other titles — you end up competing with yourself for one phrase instead of covering two.

Retitle your back catalog first

Before creating anything new, fix existing listings — it's free traffic. Rewrite titles with the formula, then watch your search position: rank movement after a retitle typically shows within days. That loop — retitle, measure, adjust — is exactly what TPTSale automates: the Store Audit scores every listing's keyword coverage, and the Rank Tracker checks your positions nightly.
